Referral Information

Clear pathways to Specialist Mental Health Care

Information for GPs, specialists and healthcare practitioners referring patients to Melbourne Psychiatry Centre.

How the referral process works

  1. Submit a referral GPs and specialists can send referrals directly to Melbourne Psychiatry Centre.
  2. Patient onboarding After the referral is received, the patient will be sent a link to the MPC patient platform to complete the required onboarding forms.
  3. Clinical review Our clinical team reviews the referral and onboarding information to determine the most appropriate next step.

Referral requirements

  • Psychiatry referrals A valid referral is generally required before a psychiatry appointment and is needed to access an eligible Medicare rebate.
  • Psychology referrals A GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral may be required when the patient wishes to claim an eligible Medicare rebate.

Our team can advise patients about the documentation required for the service they are seeking.

Information for specific referrals

  • Psychiatric second opinions Please include the specific questions to be addressed, relevant treatment history and any supporting reports. A second opinion may be available where the referral question is clear and an appropriate clinician is available.
  • TMS and esketamine treatment Please include the patient's diagnosis, relevant treatment history, current medications and the reason advanced treatment is being considered. MPC will review the referral and advise whether further information or an assessment is required.

Review and next steps

Each referral is reviewed according to clinical suitability, service scope and clinician availability.

The next step may include an intake appointment, a request for further information, appointment scheduling or a recommendation for another service.

Submitting a referral does not guarantee an appointment. This review process supports safe and appropriate care.

Some appointments may be arranged for assessment, diagnostic clarification or treatment recommendations rather than ongoing treatment. Recommendations may include follow-up at MPC, shared care with the patient's GP or referral to another provider.
