A valid referral is generally required before a psychiatry appointment and is needed to access an eligible Medicare rebate. For psychology appointments, a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral may be required if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate. Our team can advise you about the documentation required for the service you are seeking.

Your GP or specialist can send your referral directly to MPC. You may also email a copy. Please ensure the referral includes your current contact details so our team can contact you about the next steps.

After your referral is received, you will be sent a link to the MPC patient platform to complete onboarding forms. The information you provide helps our clinical team review your needs and determine the most appropriate next step, which may include an intake appointment, a request for further information, or appointment scheduling.

The forms collect important information about your current concerns, health history, medications, treating practitioners and care needs. Completing them accurately supports safe referral review and helps us direct you to the most appropriate clinician or service. Please complete the forms promptly, as your referral cannot progress until the required information has been received.

No. Every referral is reviewed for clinical suitability, service scope and clinician availability. In some circumstances, we may request further information, recommend another service, or advise that MPC is unable to offer the care required. This review process is intended to support safe and appropriate care.

An intake appointment may be offered to clarify your concerns, gather relevant background information and identify the most appropriate care pathway. It is a structured assessment and planning appointment and may occur before an appointment with a psychiatrist or another treating clinician.

Your clinician will discuss your main concerns, relevant medical and mental health history, current medications, previous treatment and your goals for care. Depending on the appointment type, the clinician may also discuss an initial formulation, further assessment, treatment options or follow-up recommendations. It can be helpful to have an up-to-date medication list and any relevant reports available.

You do not need to identify the exact service before contacting us. The referral review and onboarding process helps our team understand your needs and guide you towards the most appropriate pathway, subject to clinical suitability and availability.

Yes. Telehealth appointments are available for some patients and services. Availability depends on the clinician, the type of appointment, clinical requirements and your individual circumstances. Our team will confirm whether telehealth is appropriate when arranging your appointment.

Appointments,fees and Medicare

Consultation fees, Medicare rebates, payment information, and appointment policies.

Fees vary according to the clinician, service, appointment duration and whether the appointment is an initial or follow-up consultation. Current fee information will be provided before you confirm your booking.

Medicare rebates may be available for eligible psychiatry and psychology consultations when you hold the appropriate valid referral or treatment plan. The rebate is usually less than the full consultation fee, so an out-of-pocket cost may apply. Eligibility and rebate amounts depend on the service and Medicare requirements.

Full prepayment is taken when your appointment is booked. Your booking is not confirmed until the required payment has been received, unless MPC has advised you of another arrangement.

We require at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations and missed appointments will incur a fee. Please contact the clinic as early as possible so the appointment may be offered to another patient.

Please contact the clinic as soon as possible. Your clinician may need to finish at the scheduled time to avoid delaying other patients, which can shorten the time available for your consultation. Depending on how late you arrive, the appointment may need to be rescheduled and the applicable fee may still apply.

A support person may attend where this is clinically appropriate and agreed with your clinician. The clinician may also need to speak with you privately for part of the appointment. Please advise the clinic beforehand if you plan to bring someone with you.

Prescriptions, forms and clinical administration

Prescriptions, forms and clinical administration

Please submit your request through the prescription-request form on the MPC website. Provide complete and accurate information, including the medication name, dose, prescribing clinician and preferred pharmacy details where requested. Prescription requests are subject to clinical review and are not automatically approved.

Please allow up to two weeks for a prescription request to be reviewed and processed. Submit your request well before your medication is due to run out. Processing time may be longer if your clinician requires further information, a follow-up appointment, monitoring results or confirmation from another treating practitioner.

MPC cannot guarantee urgent or same-day prescription processing. If you have run out of medication, contact the clinic promptly and also speak with your GP or pharmacist about safe interim options. Do not change your dose or stop medication abruptly without appropriate clinical advice.

Your clinician must prescribe safely and may need to review your symptoms, response to treatment, side effects, blood pressure, pathology, medication use or other clinical information. An appointment or updated monitoring may therefore be required before a prescription can be issued.

Discuss the request with your clinician or the administration team. Completion depends on the purpose, the information available, clinical appropriateness and the clinician’s capacity. Separate fees and processing time may apply, and urgent completion cannot be guaranteed.

With your consent, MPC can communicate relevant clinical information to your GP or another treating practitioner. Requests for records or reports must follow privacy, consent and administrative requirements. Please contact the clinic for the appropriate process.

Services and assessment pathways

Information about supported conditions, care pathways, and available services.

MPC provides psychiatry, psychology, counselling, diagnostic assessment and selected advanced treatment services, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and esketamine treatment. The availability of each service depends on clinical suitability, practitioner availability and the scope of the program.

MPC offers assessment and treatment pathways for adult ADHD where clinically appropriate. Assessment may include a detailed clinical interview, developmental and functional history, questionnaires, collateral information and consideration of other conditions that can affect attention or executive functioning. A diagnosis or particular treatment cannot be guaranteed before assessment is completed.

Adult autism assessments may be available through MPC. The process can involve clinical interviews, developmental history, validated assessment tools and collateral information. The exact assessment pathway is tailored to the referral question and the information required.

Our clinicians support a broad range of presentations, which may include depression and other mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, obsessive-compulsive disorder, adult ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, psychosis, personality-related difficulties and eating disorders. Acceptance of a referral depends on the patient’s needs, clinical risk, clinician expertise and service capacity.

A psychiatric second opinion may be available where the referral question is clear and an appropriate clinician is available. Please ask the referring practitioner to include the specific questions to be addressed, relevant treatment history and any supporting reports.

Not necessarily. Some appointments are arranged for assessment, diagnostic clarification or a treatment recommendation only. Ongoing care depends on clinical need, the agreed treatment plan, clinician availability and the scope of the service. Recommendations may include follow-up at MPC, shared care with your GP, or referral to another provider.

TMS and esketamine treatment

Answers about TMS, esketamine, and advanced treatment options.

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic stimulation to influence areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It may be considered for selected patients after specialist assessment, particularly when standard treatments have not produced sufficient improvement or have not been well tolerated.

Suitability depends on your diagnosis, symptoms, previous treatments, medical history, medications and potential contraindications. A clinician must complete an assessment before recommending treatment. Referral or enquiry does not guarantee that TMS will be suitable or funded.

Esketamine is a specialist treatment that may be considered for selected adults with treatment-resistant depression. It is administered in a monitored clinical setting as part of a broader treatment plan and requires a formal assessment of clinical suitability, risks, treatment history and ongoing care arrangements.

Eligibility depends on clinical diagnosis, prior treatment response, medical history, current medications, safety considerations and applicable treatment or funding criteria. Suitability is determined by the treating psychiatrist after assessment.

Ask your GP, psychiatrist or specialist to send a referral outlining your diagnosis, treatment history, current medications and the reason for considering an advanced treatment. MPC will review the referral and advise whether further information or an assessment is required.

Referral

The team at MPC is here to help you and will provide you advice on how to get yourself referred to one of the specialists. However, it's important to note that emergency services are not provided at the centre. If you need urgent attention, please call 000 or attend at your nearest emergency department.

In most occasions, a referral from your GP is required prior to your initial appointment. This referral ensures that you receive Medicare rebate for your appointment with psychiatrist.

Some people may require a mental health treatment plan to be completed by their GP in order to seek rebate for psychology appointment. If you feel unable to ask your GP, call us to see how we can help.

Fees and Rebates

Medicare provides rebates for psychiatry and psychology consultations. The cost for your appointment is usually higher than Medicare rebate. The payment arrangements vary depending on the choice of practitioner, length of session, etc. A list of current fees will be provided at the time of booking your initial appointment. All fees are to be paid in full on the day of your appointment.

Medicare provides additional support through Medicare Safetynet. Rebates will be higher once you or your family reaches the annual Medicare Safety Net threshold. Kindly call Medicare on 132011 for further advice.

Cancellations

We understand that unexpected situations can make it hard to attend scheduled appointments. If this happens, the team at MPC will appreciate 24 hours notice so that we allocate the time to another patient on the waiting list. We will also help you to reschedule your appointment to a more convenient time. Contact us on 03 9193 8502.

For all confirmed appointment which are not attended or 24 hours' notice isn't provided, cancellation charges will apply. We will advise you of these charges at the time of your initial appointment.
